The Samsung DS-5038 is the top of the range phone handset also referred to as the Office 38 button handset. Given the 38 customisable buttons it's clear that it's been designed with receptionists in mind. This allows users to see 38 staff and/or phone line combinations at a glance. The Samsung DS-5038S Phone Handset comes in both black and silver/black options to suit your preferences.
The screen on the DS-5038S is smaller than IP equivalents at only 2 lines with 24 character display. It's adequate for most users but still small when compared to many other brands. The Samsung IP phones have much larger screens. The key difference between this and the other models (DS-5021 and the DS-5014D) is the fact you get more buttons and as a result lose the navigator jog dial. For a receptionist the buttons are far more handy than the jog dial. Each of the 38 buttons has multicolour LED status indictor lights so you can readily distinguish between staff that are available, busy or in DND mode.
If you need more than the 38 buttons for larger companies you can also add the DS-5064 add on module (AOM) with a further 64 buttons (each with their own LED indicator lights). In total you can add up to 4 AOM modules to provide 294 users at a glance. The reality is that if you needed to see more than 38 staff you may be better installing the OfficeServ Operator which is a PC based application. It is far easier to use and more efficient dealing with calls flows and lots of users. It allows the receptionist to answer and transfer calls with the click of a mouse which is incredibly simple.
Below the screen on the DS 5038 phone you'll also find 3 context sensitive soft keys. These context keys display options on the screen above so depending on what you're doing on the phone (listening to voicemail for example), it will then present the best options for that scenario. This is a common feature on most modern handsets and makes daily use much easier.
One of the great features of all Samsung handsets, both digital and IP, is that staff can easily customise the Office 38 button handset with Samsung's proprietary Easyset application. OfficeServ Easyset is a Windows Browser and is incredibly easy to use. With a PC display of your phone you customise features like Extension LED indicator light functions, Divert Target, Divert Condition and Personal Speed Dial etc with a simple click of a mouse. This means that you don't need a system administrator to affect basic user customisation on the Samsung 5038S Phone Handset.
The phone also comes with 8 selectable ring tones. Users in open office environments find this feature invaluable as they can easily distinguish their own phone ringing if away from their desk. Although unlikely, you can also wall mount the DS-5038S phone with an optional bracket. This can be handy in kitchens etc if you want to replicate the receptionist console if they happen to make a lot of coffee's etc they still have complete control of the call handling in a secondary location.
As you'd expect from a phone handset of this quality, the DS 5038 phone comes complete with a quality speaker phone for hands free operation, headset ports, conference call functionality, message wait indictors for voicemail and much more. If you're after full duplex sound quality for the ultimate conference call quality (as found on Polycom Conference Phones) you can also purchase an additional add on module.
Digital handsets like the DS-5038S phone are a very cost effective solution to accompany the OfficeServ IP Pbx systems. Many users simply don't need the extra features offered with IP handsets. Even if you're using VoIP phone lines you can still operate the entire Samsung pbx system with digital phones. If you already have existing structured cabling in place for all users then weigh up the pro's and con's of IP handsets for yourself. The main benefits of IP phones are for remote users, staff hot desking and for plug and play staff relocations. If you are looking at an equivalent level VoIP (IP) phone then you should check out the Samsung SMT-i5220 IP phone handset.
