SIP is the perfect solution for your PBX

Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) is a fancy acronym for a type of VoIP phone call service. VoIP basically means a phone call made using the internet.  There are many types of VoIP connections, but SIP is generally regarded as the best service for businesses.
While VoIP can be effective, it’s not as viable and the quality is not as good as SIP.  Also, while VoIP carries your voice calls only, SIP can transfer all forms of multimedia. That makes it perfect for voice calls, video conferencing, and any other form of media communications.

SIP services use digital data to send and receive information using the internet. If you’ve got an IP enabled phone system, it will connect directly. If, however, you’ve got an older system that uses analogue data, you will have to use a device called an Analogue Telephone adapter (ATA). This device will translate the data into digital information that can traverse the internet.

Better SIP services have standalone data connections

Every office has an internet connection that’s used for general use like email, web browsing, and downloading files and videos. In some cases, using this same data connection for your VoIP or SIP calls will be fine. However, if the connection is not reliable enough, the first thing that will be impacted will be your phone calls. When a large fie is downloaded, or a video is streamed, your connection will slow down and you’ll experience interruption and even dropouts in your calls.

In most cases, a second, separate data connection is required – one that ONLY carries your SIP calls. While it does mean paying for another service, it will guarantee that none of your general internet use will impact your phone calls. Find out more about Quality of Service.

What do you need for your phone system for SIP to work?

The most important thing to know is that you DO NOT have to purchase a new phone system to use SIP! If you have an older system, there may be a few extra steps involved. However, your phone service provider should be one that takes the hassle out of it for you. Here’s what’s needed:

  • A reliable internet connection. SIP is an NBN ready solution, but you can still use it with your existing service, and make the switch later.
  • An IP enabled phone system
    OR
  • If you have an older system, and Analogue Telephone Adapter (ATA)
  • A SIP license. Some new systems have them already. However, when you switch to SIP, your provider will talk to you about licenses and arrange it if you have an older system

If you are thinking about upgrading your phone system, you might be interested to know that SIP enabled phone systems are not more expensive. But remember – there re also a lot of good reasons to save your money and keep your existing system.
