What is a NBN phone system?

With the changes happening all across Australia, it is no doubt that you have heard about NBN phone systems. So, what are NBN phone systems? Put simply, an NBN phone system is an IP enabled phone system, where calls are made via the internet. When you hear people talking about NBN phone systems, they are most likely referring to a Hosted Phone System- also known as a Cloud Phone System, where the 'brains' of the phone system live in the cloud. However, with the NBN you also have the option of a traditional on-premise IP enabled PABX as well.

NBN Phone Systems - On Premise & Hosted

As long as your phone system is IP enabled, then it is NBN ready. Here is an overview of both types of phone system:

Hosted Cloud Phone System

You may hear Hosted Phone systems referred to in a number of different ways: NBN Phone Systems, Virtual Phone Systems, VoIP or SIP Phone systems, Cloud Phone Systems or Cloud Based Systems. Many of our customers and businesses across Australia have moved to this type of Hosted NBN Phone System - but why?

Well, put simply, a Hosted System is the smart solution for many businesses. With Hosted NBN Phone Systems there is no expensive hardware required, as there isn' t a large PABX box located in your office that all the handsets have to be wired back to. Instead, all of your system' s features, programming and data is stored 'in the cloud' . Connecting is simple, just plug your IP enabled handsets or soft-phones into an internet connection and they will connect back to the datacenter that runs your phone system automatically.

A good Hosted NBN Phone System should also come with with a heap of other benefits, including effortless expansion and free changes to programming for LIFE. The number of handsets on your phone system is almost limitless with a hosted nbn phone system (you just need a good data connection for each handset). This means the size of the system can grow with your business and you only ever need to pay for what you actually need.

In the past, Hosted Phone Systems were reserved for large companies who could afford to run a dedicated, high speed internet connection to their office. With the NBN rollout, high speed data services are now affordable for small businesses as well, and so you too can now successfully run a Hosted Phone solution.

Traditional 'On Premises' Phone System

Unlike Hosted Phone Systems, Traditional Phone Systems consist of a physical box that lives in your office. Phone systems have worked this way for a long time before Hosted Solutions arrived on the scene. On premise PABX systems have traditionally used PSTN, ISDN and, more recently, SIP trunks to make and receive calls.

As we mentioned earlier, on premise PABX systems are still a viable option if you' re looking for an NBN Ready Phone System: just because they aren' t Hosted in the cloud, doesn' t mean they can' t take advantage of the high speed data and VoIP services offered by the NBN. The most important thing is that your on premise PABX is IP compatible, which means it can send and receive digital data.

If your system is not IP enabled, don' t worry- in most cases the system can be made to work with the NBN. However, this depends on the type and age of the phone system, so you would have to talk to a supplier to find out about your own circumstances.

How Will The NBN Affect Phone Systems & Every Other Device In Your Business?

There has been a lot of talk about the NBN and the apparent bene?ts it will bring to everyday Australians. But what exactly is the NBN and how will it ACTUALLY bene?t your business?

Basically - the NBN roll out is an upgrade to Australia' s copper telecommunications infrastructure, and is being carried out by the NBN Co.

When it is installed in your area, existing copper networks will be removed, you' ll have access to faster internet, and so the way your business makes and receives phone calls will change.

As the NBN co disconnects all the existing telco infrastructure across the country, making sure your phone system will work with the NBN should be one of your top priorities today.

The most important thing to know is that the NBN isn' t a choice.

Once it' s in your area, you' ll have a certain amount of time to migrate all of your services to an NBN solution. That includes your phone lines, internet service, fax machines, EFTPOS, and your phone system. Yep - everything!

Traditional PSTN phone lines will be removed or made redundant, and the future for your Phone System will be VoIP. The way you make phone calls will change, and you will need to prepare your business before the existing infrastructure becomes disposable.

As we mentioned - the NBN isn' t a choice. That means VoIP isn' t really a choice either, so getting to understand what it is and how it works will benefit you no matter what.

We strongly suggest getting an NBN-Ready Audit done at your office as soon as possible, so a qualified technician - not salesperson - can assess what technology you have, and how the NBN will affect each piece.

Don' t wait until the NBN is live and you are rushed into a poor business decision, enquire about an NBN Audit today.

A phone system lets you do this at a touch, letting any handset user direct callers to the right extension with ease. In this way your callers will receive a positive, professional image of your company while your staff can remain productive throughout their day.

Call Park, Hold + Pickup

The most commonly used button on your new handset will be the ‘hold’ button – and with good reason. It’s essential for smooth, professional handling of calls.

When callers are placed on hold they can hear professional messages or music that you choose. It is simply uploaded to the host as a .WAV file and will play automatically when required.

Voicemail To Email

For many people in small business they are often out and about and not always at their desks. No matter where you are your voicemail can now be sent to your email. This means if you have a smart phone you’ll be able to listen to your office emails on your mobile phone, laptop or IPAD.

Day & Night Greetings

Most systems include day & night greetings as standard to ensure your callers receive a polished, professional impression of your company, first time, any time. If you receptionist(s) are busy on calls the system will overflow and answer the call.

Extension Dialling

You can easily dial any extension (staff member) in or out of the office at no charge that is connected to the host and part of your solution. Business NBN Phone System Handset Options

Most people can get confused about phone systems and phone handsets, and tend to think that they are the same thing, when they are not. The difference between the phone system and the handsets is that although the handsets are of course an important factor, they are essentially keyboards for the phone system itself. The phone system is where a lot of the features and functionality stem from. Therefore, it is important that you first choose a phone system that suits your needs, and then choose the handset that you want to work with that system.

The majority of customers who are purchasing an NBN Ready Phone System are going for a Hosted Solution, and there are a number of reasons for this. First and foremost, unlike on premise phone systems, many businesses find Hosted systems just plain easier to install, manage, upgrade, and maintain. Another influence is the fact that Hosted Solutions are the perfect NBN Ready Phone System, but you don' t actually have to have the NBN to start using them - all you need is a reliable internet connection (your provider should confirm this for you before you buy).

Ultimately, it is a matter of preference and opinion. However, if we listen to popular opinion, then a Hosted Phone System is the preferred way to go.
