The NEC UNIVERGE SV8100SE Communications Server is designed for small to medium businesses and incredibly can expand from 2 to a massive 512 users. It's the entry level solution in the latest series of NEC UNIVERGE SV8000 phone system series. It offers an easy to use, feature rich and affordable option for most SME customers. The difference between the smaller NEC SL1100 phone system and the SV8100SE is the addition of advanced functionality like CTI applications, a wide range of NEC digital and IP handsets to choose from and advanced IP functionality such as multisite networking and remote workers. If you're looking for "basic" then the NEC SL1100 is probably the better and definitely cheaper option.
Although the NEC SV8100SE pbx can grow to 512 users NEC suggests that it's ideal target is 20 users. A key difference between this and the larger NEC SV8100 pabx is a lower price point and the fact that this unit is wall or floor mounted (not rack mountable). The SV8100 Model SE can be migrated to the SV8100 Communications Server at a later stage however you do have to make some changes (albeit not the entire system). If you're going to grow beyond 30 users you would be better implementing the SV8100 from the outset. Just make sure you do your homework if you're looking to grow at your primary site.
Unlike unreliable VoIP ATA services, SIP trunking is ideal for SME applications and delivers reliability as well as perfect VoIP sound quality. The SV8100SE can support up to 200 SIP trunks however the number of simultaneous SIP calls is limited by the Voice over IP Resources (NEC IP Pad Channels) you have licensed on the system. In its basic configuration there are 32 IP Pad channels available which are more than enough for even larger companies. It's important that you don't confuse SIP phone lines with IP handsets. One is your phone lines the other is a type of handset. Although you may choose to have SIP channels for cheaper line rentals and phone calls, it doesn't necessitate that you also need to have IP phones. This is one of the benefits of hybrid solutions like the SV8100SE that you can opt to connect cheaper digital and analogue phones whilst not compromising the overall solution.
Being a hybrid pbx the answer is a resounding yes. At least 50% of customers implementing a VoIP capable solution like the NEC SV8100SE don't utilise the VoIP phone line technology. It doesn't matter whether they're under contract with their current provider or they simply aren't ready to change technologies. What does matter is they can easily change to VoIP with the SV8100SE in the future if/ when they're ready. If you're looking at migrating to SIP trunks then make sure the numbers actually stack up. Don't automatically assume that VoIP will save you lot of money. In the majority of cases it does. You should get your potential SIP provider to analyse your phone bill first for an accurate savings analysis.
The smaller NEC SL1100 phone systemonly offers users 2 options. For the SV8100SE you can choose from the entire NEC digital, IP and Wireless range. With over 20 different handsets to choose between there is literally a solution for every staff member and every budget. NEC phones are typically the largest cost component of a SV8100SE pbx so take the time to work out the right composition and you should save yourself serious dollars. Also being a hybrid solution the SV8100SE telephone system allows you to connect any combination of handset types (IP or Digital). Check out the technical specs at the bottom of the page for exact maximums in the starting configuration you're thinking of. There are three ranges of handsets to choose from - NEC DT700 IP series handsets , NEC DT330 digital series handsets and the cheaper NEC DT310 digital series.
Here is a list of the NEC telephone handsets avaiable for the SV8100SE:
Like many IP PBX systems the NEC SV 8100SE telephone system offers the ability to twin your mobile phone to the system. Twining is where your desk phone and mobile are programmed to ring at the same time when the office extension number is called. This ensures your staff are always contactable for your staff and your customers.
Other manufacturers have taken this technology much further and if you have mobile staff then you should really investigate this feature set and its respective limitations. Brands like Avaya and some hosted solutions allow you to download sophisticated SIP applications for your iPhone, Tablet or Android device. With this you can have high featured access to the phone system anywhere you get Wi-Fi or 3G services. You can even get Video conferencing and GEO location services as well through their applications. In the right company these features are worth their weight in productivity gold so do your homework.
Apart from IP handsets that allow you to operate both devices from the one Ethernet cable, you can also load NEC's softphone application on staff PC's. This way you get a virtual phone handset on your PC screen that acts and performs just like your real office desk phone (even if you don't have one). Softphone applications are also great for mobile staff and people that travel. Anywhere they receive high speed internet they can now have access to the phone system and access it virtually on their laptop.
NEC handsets have always been very easy to use and now with their web based application you can administer your own SV8100SE system too. For basic add, moves and changes you are no longer reliant on external parties. You have complete control for free with your own designated in-house system administrator. This can save you real money in the long term and you can make changes any time from anywhere.
The NEC SV8100SE VoIP pbx has numerous options embedded into the system. It doesn't mean they are free it just means you only need to pay for one off licences to easily activate advanced CTI apps and feature sets. CTI is simply an acronym for Computer Telephone Integration. This is the technical ability of your SV8100SE pbx to communicate with your computer network and PC's.
If you're looking for Softphones, Call Centre Applications, Open source TAPI integrations, Microsoft integration, PC attendant, Call reporting or other CTI applications then you should look at what's included and what's not. This type of functionality differs from brand to brand and some include features for free, whereas other manufactures charge. It's important that you clearly identify what you need now as well as what you might potentially need in the future. This way you can see what additional costs you may be up for if you decide to implement them.
