Samsung DS-5014S Phone Handset (Office 14 Button) (standard handset)

The Samsung DS-5014S is designed for standard users and is also referred to as the Office 14 button handset. The only difference between this and the model up, the DS 5014, is that it doesn't offer the navigator jog dial. For many users the multidirectional navigator and accompanying buttons on the 5014D actually make it faster and easier easier to access speed dial, directory dials, incoming/outgoing call logs and other functions so keep this in mind. The Samsung DS 5014S phone comes in all black as well as black and silver colour choices. The screen is easy to read and offers 2 lines with 24 characters per line. Most IP phone screens are larger as are many other digital phone brands. The screen is on the small side and a little outdated.

If you need more than the 14 buttons for more visibility you can upgrade to the navigator 21(DS 5021), the Office 38 (DS 5038), or you can attach the additional DS-5064 add on module (AOM) to the handset. This provides users with a further 64 buttons (each with multicolour LED indicator lights). The reality is that 14 customisable buttons are more than adequate for 90% of staff. Plus, each of the 14 programmable buttons on the phone have accompanying multicolour LED status indicator lights so you can easily and clearly distinguish between staff that are available, busy or in DND mode based on the colour displayed.

Below the screen on the DS 5014S phone there are 3 context sensitive soft keys. The way these operate is to present on screen up to 3 options. It's context sensitive because the options logically changes depending on what function you're performing. For example if you're on a call it will present options like conference, transfer etc. This type of intuitive logic makes modern digital phones significantly easier to operate.

With the Samsung DS-5014S phone you also get:

• 7 fixed function buttons that cover everyday features like voicemail access, conference calling, transfer, hold etc
• Headset jack
• If you're after full duplex hands free sound quality, like Polycom conference phones, you can even purchase an add-on module to achieve this.

The Samsung DS-5014S phone also comes with 8 unique ring tones. This is an excellent idea in open plan environments and allows your staff to easily distinguish between ringing handsets. This is a far cry from the multitude of polyphonic and downloadable ring tones available on IP handsets but it is still better than only one. If you prefer to wall mount the phone for warehouses, kitchen etc you can also purchase an optional wall mounting kit.

Samsung also offers a PC customisable handset application called Easyset. This sits on your PC and gives control of the DS-5014S handset to your individual staff. With the Easyset they can quickly and simply change a multitude of handset features whenever they like for free.

The smarter choice of digital phone would probably be the DS 5014D phone with the navigator function and it's not that much more expensive. Just remember that you don't need to go to IP handsets even if you're implementing VoIP for your phone calls.
